FR: Malgré ses nombreux déplacements, c'est dans son propre jardin que Darrin Zammit Lupi a réalisé ce qu'il considère être son oeuvre la plus importante, en documentant le sort et la tragédie des boat people qui tentent de gagner, de l'Afrique, les côtes européennes. Isle Landers est un projet artistique consacré à la photographie (associant également vidéo et audio), basé sur des documents illustrant la vie des demandeurs d'asile et migrants pendant et après leur voyage à travers la Méditerranée, vers Malte et l'Europe entière. Darrin Zammit Lupi est né à Malte en 1968. Il a commencé sa carrière de photographe au Malta Independent en 1992, puis a décidé de travailler en tant que freelance. Après une année de formation au National Council for the Training of Journalists au Royaume-Uni, il a entrepris des missions à l'étranger, en Albanie et dans l'ex-Yougoslavie déchirées par la guerre, remportant le CPB Award to Journalists en 1993 pour son travail en Albanie. Il a rejoint Times of Malta à la fin de 1996 et est devenu reporter pour l'agence Reuters en 1997. Il a depuis remporté cinq fois l'Award for Press Photography et trois fois le Sport Photography Award, ainsi qu'une récompense spéciale pour sa créativité en photojournalisme. Au Royaume-Uni, il a été nommé Media and Documentary Photographer of the Year en 2013 et 2014. Ces dernières années, il a couvert la tragédie du tsunami en Asie du Sud-Est, la crise des réfugiés lors de la guerre du Kosovo, les questions liées aux objectifs de développement pour le millénaire dans diverses parties de l'Afrique, le tremblement de terre à Aquila, en Italie, la guerre en Libye, le naufrage du Costa Concordia et plusieurs autres missions nationales ou internationales. EN: Despite travelling widely, it is in his own backyard that Darrin Zammit Lupi has done what he believes is his most important work, documenting the plight and tragedy of the boat people trying to reach European shores from Africa. Isle Landers is a photographic art project (also using video and audio) based on documentation of the lives of asylum seekers and migrants through and after their journey across the Mediterranean to Malta and to mainland Europe. Darrin Zammit Lupi was born in Malta in 1968. He started his photography career with The Malta Independent in 1992, but decided to turn freelance shortly afterwards. After a year's training with the National Council for the Training of Journalists in the UK, he undertook foreign assignments in Albania and war-torn former Yugoslavia, winning the BPC Award to Journalists 1993 for his Albanian work. He joined Times of Malta in late 1996 and became a Reuters stringer in 1997, and has since won the Malta Journalism Awards for Press Photography five times and the Sport Photography award three times, as well as a special award for Creativity in Photojournalism. The Societies in the UK named him Media and Documentary Photographer of the Year for 2013 and 2014. In recent years, he covered the South-East Asia tsunami tragedy, the refugee crisis during the war in Kosovo, issues related to the Millennium Development Goals in various parts of Africa, the earthquake in L'Aquila, Italy, the war in Libya, the Costa Concordia disaster and several other national and international assignments. |
